When considering a major kitchen remodeling exercise, think of the kitchen in it’s entirety; think of the layout of the entire kitchen and the optimum utilization of space, even if this requires changing the locations of many of the features & appliances. Kitchen islands – the new trend
In keeping with the new role of the kitchen in the family’s life, many homeowners have changed over to the concept of providing a kitchen island where previously a small table used to be. The kitchen island is commonly placed in the middle of the kitchen floor if sufficient space is available around it for easy movement. It separates the cook from the rest of the room and still maintains an open floor plan. Additional floor space can be provided to the kitchen by fully or partly removing the wall to the adjoining dining room if necessary.
The kitchen island is often provided with a sink or a stove top and a dish washer. If the space permits, a microwave can also be provided. This way most of the food preparation and clean up could be done at the island. Most homeowners prefer to have a seating area with bar stools at the island. This way the island is very helpful for daily activities like breakfast for the family, kids’ homework as well as for entertaining friends.
The island also provides extra cabinet space under the countertop. Items for cleaning and extra pots and pans can be stored here, and often you’ll find a wine rack built in, which adds to the style of the kitchen. Islands are also an eye catching feature of your kitchen, and will greatly enhance the look & décor of your home.
