Features You Should Definitely Include in a Backyard Or Garden

Whilst permanent elements of your backyard such as its shape, soil and aspect will all have an effect on its final design, its character will be determined by you and your requirements. Working out exactly what those requirements are is an essential first step in planning your garden, and you should start by making a complete list of you and your family’s requirements.

These requirements will vary widely from family to family, for example one family with small children might want a large lawn for them to play and a lack of hard surfaces and brick walls where they might hurt themselves. On the other hand a young professional couple will probably want social spaces such as decking or patios in order to entertain, and which is low maintenance.

Use the following list as a guide when you start work on your survey plans, to ensure that all your priorities are met.

Here are some initial ideas we’ve put together to get you started:

Make sure you don’t try to cram too many features into too small an area. Also this is a general list and local terrain and weather conditions will mean many of these ideas may be redundant.
