If you are working on redecorating your bathroom, you may not have considered replacing your bathroom vanity. However, if you simply have a sheet of glass in place above your sink as many old homes do, the very first thing you will want to think about is a new mirror. Believe it or not, the mirror above your sink is the strongest item that you can purchase for the restroom, and the largest item you have a direct say in.
Obviously, when it comes to the toilet, sink, and shower besides replacing them with newer models, there is not much you can do about their size, location, and overall look. Therefore, you outside of a shower curtain and toilet seat cover you are kind of stuck. The bathroom vanity however, is the other large item in your bathroom that you have complete control over.
Therefore, it is the one item that is going to speak the loudest about your decorating style and represent the overall feel of your restroom. After all, if you have seen one toilet, you have seen them all. On the other hand, not many houses have the same bathroom vanity, making them a piece that stands out on its own merits.
Think about it. Even a public restroom has a mirror, generally just a slab of glass that people can check their reflection in. You want to give your guests a more comfortable feel when they are in your restroom than they get from a public bathroom. Plus, almost everybody is going to check their reflection out in the mirror before they leave, meaning almost everyone will notice your mirror.
There are many ways that you can choose your bathroom vanity, but the best way to approach the matter is by looking at the size of your sink and the overall theme of your bathroom. In general, you want your mirror to be about the same size as your sink. If you have a small sink you may go a little larger, and vice versa, if you have a large sink you may go a little smaller.
Basically, you want your bathroom vanity to be the centerpiece of your restroom since you can control the type you pick, but you do not want to dramatically overpower the bathroom. Along the same lines, you do not want it to be so small it starts to lack a practical purpose. One great way to balance your mirror if you have a larger sink is to place potpourri holders on either side or a towel holder. You can match the trimmings of this with the mirror for a more stellar feel.
Finally, you want to make sure your bathroom vanity fits in alongside the theme of your bathroom. For example, you may have an earthy warm feeling in which case you would want a wooden trimming for the mirror. Or, if you have more of a metallic theme for your restroom you might choose a silver or gold trimming for the vanity.
