Tips for Packing Delicate Items to Put in Self Storage

Getting a self storage unit can be a happy moment for some people. It is nice to be able to safely store items without having to clutter up an entire home. The only problem with getting a new self storage unit is packing delicate items in such a way that they will not come to any harm. No one wants to get something out of storage that was very valuable and find that it has been broken because it was not packed correctly. Before you start panicking and worrying about breaking all of your important items because of improper packing take a moment, relax, and keep these tips in mind when you get ready to take your special items to your new self storage unit.

The first and most important thing to remember when packing delicate items is to carefully wrap them all. Do not just shove your delicate things into an unlined box and hope they come out of storage in one whole piece. Instead take a moment and wrap each, individual, delicate item with bubble wrap or an equivalent.  It might seem like a silly thing to do but this will help keep your delicate items safe while protecting you and other items if they do happen to break. When you are wrapping do not be afraid to go overboard. Try to establish a good cushion of bubble wrap around each item before packing it in the box.

If bubble wrap is not available it is not the end of the world. Plain old newspaper can be used just as well to wrap each delicate item carefully. Tissue paper can also be used but only as a last resort. Use tape to close each item so that the item cannot slip out from the paper that is holding it. Whenever possible use the original boxes that the delicate items came in. The boxes provided by manufactures were designed to keep their products safe in many different situations and are often perfect for transporting delicate items from a home to a storage unit.

Secondly, make sure there is no room for movement in your boxes. The last thing you want to hear is anything, especially broken glass, moving around in a box. Packing extra protection, bubble wrap, and cushioning into all boxes will help keep all items included safe from harm. All boxes should be packed so tightly that nothing could possibly move inside of them. If anything is moving in the box it could lead to trouble when items break or drop during transport.

Do not attempt to shove more items into a box in order to pack it tightly and save on boxes. Doing this will lead to a box full of broken glass and hurt feelings. Instead fill all loose space with any available soft item such as newspaper or bubble wrap though clothing will do in a serous pinch. Packing delicate items around a handful of clothing would help save money on bubble wrap and help ensure the safety of all delicate items.

Third, label all of the boxes as soon as they are packed. If you are only packing a few delicate items in boxes and the rest of your boxes contain clothes, books, and other items that can be handled roughly then take the time to label everything. If you label all of your boxes carefully you will reduce the risk of you mistaking your delicate items for something else and breaking them on accident. This will also help alert anyone that is helping you move your things know which items are delicate and which items are not delicate. Make sure that nothing too heavy is placed on top of the delicate items and also be sure to avoid shaking all over your delicate items since that could lead to a terrible accident.

Packing delicate items to put into self storage does not have to be as difficult as one might think. It only extreme patience, skill with delicate objects, and a determination to make sure the delicate items get packed up properly. When wrapping each item you have to be extremely careful to make sure that the item is secured with tape or even blue. Using the thickest paper or items in the house to wrap the delicate items should be done whenever possible. Always secure the delicate items in their boxes to avoid breakage during movements and keep all boxes well labeled to avoid confusion and careless mistakes in the future.
