Removing Wallpaper – A Simple Home Improvement Project

We have put together a list of what we think are the essential tools that you will need when stripping or removing your wallpaper.

As you may be aware, there are a huge array of techniques and tools that are recommended when stripping wallpaper. Your local home improvement retailer might tell you “just peal the wallpaper from the wall”, and your neighbor could offer the advice of “just rub a little fabric softener on it”. While these may be useful techniques for some, they don’t fit for most situations.

A recent study indicates that wallpaper most people want to remove is between 5 to 15 years old. From our personal experience, this means that the wallpaper will be either extremely easy to remove because it’s old and the adhesive brittle or it could be potentially very difficult as it may have been applied directly to the sheetrock.

In either case, here are what we believe to be the most valuable tools to your project:
Safety glasses or goggles: often over looked but an essential safety item.
Gloves: these can be dishwashing gloves or something to protect your hands from liquid and/or slips of the hand.
Plastic Sheet: Called and branded by a number of names, this is nothing more than a thin plastic sheet that can be found in the paint section of any home improvement retailer. Removing wallpaper usually creates a mess; therefore, use the sheet to not only cover the floor but any surrounding features. To keep it in place, use masking tape. And, when you are done with your project, just roll the whole thing up (wallpaper and all) and throw it away.

Zinsser Wallpaper Scraper: this tool does the same thing as a normal flat blade scrapper with the exception of one very important feature, its scraping blade is set to an optimal angle. This means that you won’t have to worry about gouging the wall or damaging the sheetrock or drywall when scrapping. It may be a little more expensive to purchase than a normal scrapper but it will save you a lot of time. We are not brand promoting here, so if you find another manufacture that produces a tool that does the same thing, go with it. You should be able to find it at any of the larger home improvement retailers.

Drywall Screen: this is a metal “screen” that acts like sandpaper. It is designed to remove excess spackle or joint compound from drywall but it’s extremely useful for removing the small areas of dry adhesive that may still be on the wall after you have removed all your wallpaper. It can also be used for those small tough patches of wallpaper that the scrapper that just cant get to.

Orbital Scorer: this tool is sometimes called a “paper tiger” or a “wallpaper scorer”. Its function is to place small holes in your wallpaper so that removing agents or steam can loosen the wallpaper adhesive. It’s a very useful tool and one you should have on hand if you need to use a steamer or removing agent.
Ok, here is where we, depending upon the wallpaper, use the following:

DIF Gel: there are many wallpaper removing agents made by this company but we have found the gel to be less messy. That is to say, it has less a tendency to drip off the wall onto the floor. It is a good one to use if your wallpaper is NOT applied directly onto the sheetrock (this means that when the wallpaper was installed, there was no undercoat of paint applied). It is also a good product for wallpaper that is coming off but not in large sections.

To apply the product, the best method that we have found is to score the wallpaper with the orbital scorer and then use a paint roller to spread the gel out evenly over the surface you are working on. Of course, we advise that you read the manufactures recommendations and safety warnings first.

Wallwik: This product is more of a “product pack” than a single product. This product is great for removing wallpaper that HAS been applied directly to sheetrock. It’s also great for grass or fiber based wallpapers. It’s also great for those wallpapers that nothing else seems to work. The downside to this product is it requires several steps to make it work. And since it’s a product pack, you really need to purchase the pack to make it work. That is to say everything but the scoring tool, I still prefer the orbital scorer.

Once your wallpaper has been removed and the remaining adhesive is removed, you are now ready to proceed with your project. For some, this will be applying a coat of paint, for others this will be hanging new wallpaper.

Anyone who has ever had drywall in their house knows that eventually a door will get slammed open; a piece of furniture smacked against the wall, or some other incident will create a gouge, a hole or a scratch in the drywall that must be fixed. When those times happen, get out your tools and get to work: there’s no need to hire a contractor to come in and patch your drywall, it’s a relatively easy fix that you can handle yourself!
The first thing you’ll need are a few essentials to handle the job right:
-A drywall repair kit.
-Clean tin can lid.
-Tape measure.
-Keyhole saw.
-Thin wire or string.
-Scissors or wire cutters.
-Scrap wood.
-Putty knife.
-Drywall patching compound.
-Sandpaper.
-Primer and paint.
-Paintbrushes.
The easiest way to fix any drywall repair project is to purchase a drywall repair kit from your local home improvement store. Be sure you measure the hole that needs fixed and buy the appropriate kit for the job. For example, a drywall patch for a ceiling is thicker than one for a wall.
Once you’re ready to begin, remove any loose paper or plaster around the edges of the hole, then apply drywall patch, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
To make a repair to a small drywall hole without a kit, follow these instructions:
Step 1:
Prepare tin can lid that is at least 11/2 inches more in diameter than hole in drywall for backing piece. Use keyhole saw to cut out narrow horizontal slit in wall on each side of hole. Measurement of hole plus both narrow slits should equal diameter of lid so you can insert lid sideways into hole.
Step 2:
Use awl to punch two holes in center of lid. Thread 12-inch piece of wire or string through holes.
Step 3:
Holding ends of wire, slide lid through slit. Still holding wire, pull lid toward you until it’s flat against inside of wall. Can lid should be held firmly against inside of wall.
Step 4:
Use putty knife to apply premixed drywall patching compound over patch following manufacturer’s instructions. Pack the compound into the hole, keeping it inside. Do not spread it on wall surface. Leave patch slightly low, and don’t try to level it. Let patch dry until it turns bright white, typically at least 24 hours. When dry, cut string or wire and remove stick.
Step 5:
To finish patch, fill it completely with more patching compound to make patch level with wall surface. Let dry, lightly sand area, prime, and paint.

I watch many good home improvement shows on television and I really enjoy many of them. The problem that I experience is sometimes, my inability to produce the same end results. Why does something that appears so easy, result in a job that turns out much more difficult? It really does look easy.
I am pretty handy and do almost all of my electrical, plumbing, gardening,car maintenance and yard maintenance. One thing I have learned is that we should try to use the right tool. I am not suggesting that we go out and buy every tool we see Norm use on his show.
His workshop will remain in the dream category for most people. You should have some decent basic tools though. Each must decide for himself what he plans to accomplish and what are the basic tools required.
Temperament and personality may be a factor. Most of the experts we see on TV, seem educated about their tools and procedures and they seem deliberate and patient. I think we should at least have a basic plan beforehand to guide us along and to get us going in the right direction.
I think we need to be patient with each step and we should not try to move too fast. This should set us up for an acceptable end result.
Is there value in home improvement?
Well there is the obvious – money saving. But there is more. You will derive more pleasure from that garden bench if you managed to build it yourself rather than from one you bought at the local hardware. There is much more that is not so obvious.
Have you ever worked with your kids or grand kids on a project? It’s fun and they learn to do things for themselves in the process. My own children have saved very much money by doing things that others pay to have done. I get a little personal pride from that. I like to think I was a small factor in that ability.
Another aspect would be demonstrated by achieving exactly what you want. I shudder at these people on TV telling me what I want and using all those odd terms to describe the fixtures and colors etc. Where do they get those seemingly weird terms to describe matching conditions and pieces of furniture and wall coverings.
I simply know I want this particular result and don’t want somebody deciding what I need or want. I guess that’s only me. The bottom line – I will manage to have what I want when I am finally finished.
Another benefit can be found just in learning something new. Maybe you will find abilities you didn’t even know that you possessed. Maybe you will discover a more acceptable birdhouse for your habitat.
Are there downsides to home improvement. There is probably something to be said for “saving money”. I know I said this was a benefit! Well, maybe you weren’t quite as handy as you thought. Maybe you took the long way there and it cost you more. That can happen. I wouldn’t consider that all bad. Experiment and see what you can accomplish.
Sometimes your project just doesn’t work out. You have still learned something in that.
Are home improvement projects for everyone. I know some people would quickly answer “no” to this question. I wouldn’t be so quick to make that judgment. Whether you are very successful or the project is a dismal failure – you are going to learn something.
Maybe you will only learn that you need to be very careful in selecting which projects you will undertake. Maybe you will learn that you are pretty handy. However, we will all learn something by taking on some sort of home improvement project!
